According to Google Maps, I am going to be in the middle of the Pacific Ocean... on an the "nonexistent island."
But if you zoom in closely, I will actually be on a beautiful island known as, Rarotonga, and intern at the Esther Honey Foundation for 6 months! What a perfect way to end my fifth year. But a little background on why I picked this internship because people have asked me why I decided to pick an internship that works with animals instead of humans:
I attended a conference called Zoobiquity, which discussed the similarities between animal and human medicine. Many diseases are shared between animals and humans, but most physicians see animals and their illness as “different.” Instead of segregating the roles of physician and veterinarian based on the species of the patient, they suggested learning from one another. After the conference, I was inspired and decided to intern in at EHF to gain a more holistic perspective on medicine.
These past two weeks, I have said farewell to all my friends, family, and coworkers. I've shed tears and hugged many people. It's always tough saying goodbye and I am going to miss Seattle dearly, but I am also excited to meet my new home.
I have so many questions that I hope to answer when I get there:
- How bad is the humidity? Is it going to be worse than Asia?
- Are there places to run? Are there places to hike?
- Am I going to make any friends? Will they like me?
- Am I going to be the only Asian on the island?
- How is the internet really like? Is it as bad and expensive as they say it is?
Guess I will find out when I get there! 7 more hours until the henro flies!
